Wiki
The wiki at wiki.vseth.ethz.ch is regularly used by many active members of VSETH for documentation and knowledge retention. A well-managed Wiki can make the work of the association much easier, especially for new board members. All student associations, commissions and other organisations affiliated with VSETH can use the Wiki service free of charge.

Documentation for users
General
The Wiki Service is managed by VSETH ISG and provides a separate area for user groups. This separate area is in turn managed and revised by the professional associations and co. themselves.
Example
The student association XY would like to record its knowledge and experience in order to make the work of the association easier for those who will be responsible in the future. To this end, the association decides to use the VSETH Wiki. They decide that only the person responsible for IT and the president may edit the docu-wiki. The entire board has access to the wiki. If, for example, the person responsible for events wants to edit something in the wiki, he or she can do so via their OIV or the president. Important information such as "how to successfully organize a general assembly" is now recorded in the docu-wiki and can be helpful especially in case of fluctuations, i.e. joining and leaving the board. In case of a change of the person responsible for IT or the president, the new person in the corresponding function will receive the permissions in the Wiki.
Access
A shared drive is accessed via the groups of the VSETH group concept. All VSETH groups are synchronized in the Wiki and are used to manage the permissions on the Wikis.
For example: The VIS has a Wiki to present information to its members. The access to the Wiki will be linked by ISG to the group vseth-1116-vis upon request of the OIV. This means that all users in this group get access to the Wiki.
Additionally, it is possible to have a public Wiki. This means users will be able to view the Wiki without logging in via their nethz Account. Is this the case, anonymous users will only be able to view the space, but not to edit or comment.
Permission levels
On the Wiki there are different levels of permissions which may be given to groups:
View | Comment | Edit Content | Add Content | Delete Content | Create Templates | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
spaceAdmin | ||||||
contentManager | ||||||
contributor | ||||||
commenter |
The spaceAdmin permission is given to OIVs exclusively.
Page restrictions
In the Wiki, pages may be restricted individually. It is discerned between view and edit rights. Page level restrictions are always more restrictive than space level permissions! This means, if a group is permitted to view but not to edit a Wiki, this group will not be able to edit subpages of the Wiki, regardless of the restrictions set for that page.
Example:
The VIS has a Wiki for the members of its commissions. Since this Wiki is managed by the board, the group vseth-1116-vis-kom is only given viewing permissions while the group vseth-1116-vis-vs has additional editing rights. The board now creates subpages for each of the commissions to present themselves and grants the respective commission editing rights on the page. Still, commission member John Doe is unable to edit the page of his commission because his group (or any of its parent groups) does not have editing rights in a space-level capacity. Thus, to solve the problem, group vseth-1116-vis-kom must first be granted editing rights on the entire Wiki. After that, individual page restrictions may be put into place. For example for the CAT subpage, group vseth-1116-vis-kom-cat may be granted editing rights on the page, whereas vseth-1116-vis-kom may be restricted to view-only.

Plugins
The Wiki is not just a place to write down notes. Useful macros and plugins make the wiki much more than just that! We can offer you the following plugins and highly recommend to use them:
Plugin name | Usage | Comment |
---|---|---|
Scroll View | Depict wiki-content as web page. | Useful if certain pages or information should be published. Our user documentation docs.vseth.ethz.ch is published with this plugin. |
Scroll Translation | Keep a multilingual wiki. | Whether for exchange students or other foreign-language students, it is worthwhile to keep the Wiki multilingual. |
Google Drive Integration | Embed Google Drive files and Google Drive folders directly or via link into the Wiki | Since VSETH offers the GSuite service, which is used often and by many users, this plugin is very useful. |
Draw Io Integration | Online application for creating diagrams, tables and useful overviews | Further information is available here. Can be used directly in the Wiki! |
Secure | To protect sensitive information in the Wiki such as passwords | Access may be enabled or disabled for specific users or groups. |
