Documentation for users

This service entails:

  • Switching on network sockets in VSETH premises
  • Activation of non-personal devices in the ETH network (e.g. printers, office PC or IoT).
  • Setting up internet domains
  • Adjustments to the firewall of the VSETH VPZ

Switching on network sockets

If there is a network socket in the office, it does not automatically mean that Internet can be accessed through it. To activate a network socket, please submit a ticket with the UTP number written directly on the socket. Please note that activations only happen on Tuesdays and Thursdays; thus, spontaneous activations are not possible.

If a network socket is not used for more than one year, it will be deactivated automatically.

Activation of devices

Every network-enabled device must be authenticated at ETH. For personal devices, this is possible through the personal wireless/VPN login, for impersonal devices, however, personal login data should not necessarily be entered. In those cases the VSETH ISG can register the device with its MAC address in the ETH network. To do this, please submit a ticket with the MAC address and the UTP number of the network socket. The network sockets are not necessary for the activation, but we can avoid the error where the network socket is switched off.

Setting up internet domains

It is possible to point additional domains to your own websites or even set up subdomains as a simple redirect. To do this, please submit a ticket with the desired domain and the clear destination (URL/IP).

Adjustments to the firewall

Organizations that operate their own Internet services with special ports within the VSETH network may be enabled in the firewall, if required. The reverse is of course also possible, whereby services are restricted to certain networks or IPs. In this case the VSETH ISG reserves the right to edit or completely reject the request in case of security concerns. Therefore, a short justification is always helpful when submitting the ticket.

FAQ

Here you will find the most important answers to frequently asked questions. If your question is not answered here, please send an e-mail to vseth-it-support@ethz.ch

If there is a wireless network connection to the ETH network and the PC has not been activated, the user always ends up in the public docking network and must log in with their personal login data.

VSETH's IT support group will then deal with them in accordance with its response times for queries (SLAs).
